Switching To Audio Editing Software

Maybe it’s time you ditch old school and look into the multi-tracking possibilities of audio editing software.

Letting go of old tricks

So you’ve bought a guitar, managed to learn a few chords, and found you can actually write your own songs from simple D-A-G-A progressions. You’ve tried recording your songs in your old school handy recorder—and as you listened, you thought it could use some tambourines, bongos, or maybe a crash or two–you suddenly think about all the possibilities… But how can you get it all in there with just your mono tape recorder?

Yup – this is the time to use audio editing software and welcome multi-tracking into your world.

Multi-tracking concept

The multi-tracking concept is the ability to record several tracks separately (i.e. voice track, drum track, guitar track), and layer them together so that they can be edited individually, as a whole, or two or more tracks simultaneously; and then mixed and played back in harmony. Most audio editing software products offers multi-tracking so you can record or control the levels of one track while another is playing in the background. For example, you can record a voice track over a pre-recorded guitar piece—something you cannot do with a single track recorder.

Software options

You can find audio editing freeware on the internet, which means you can have your very own home recording studio for free. Freeware versions usually have basic features: such as record, play rewing, fast forward, and pause, as well as level controls and panning (left to right). More advanced features like tone correction can usually be found in paid or proprietary versions. Popular audio editing software includes Cakewalk, Adobe Audition, Mixcraft, and Sound Forge. These programs offer mixing capabilities, sampling, virtual instruments, and Midi capabilities.

Computer peripherals

To get the most out of your audio editing software, you may want to invest in audio peripherals such as speakers and microphones. Make sure you get a good set of audio speakers, including a sub-woofer, to get a wide range of sound frequencies. A good set of headphones is also a good alternative. You will also need a sound card and aux cables for inputting jacks and mics. Good luck!

An MP3 Editor Download Trick that Works

You signed up for a teleseminar and ended up missing it. Dang!

But the hosts recorded it. Yah!

They sent you an email message that says “Go here now and listen to the call in its entirety. BUT the web link in the email message points direct to the MP3 file and your browser’s protesting. Dang again.

The message you’ve received looks something like…

“You can download and listen to the call to find out our exact secrets. Go here now:

http://www.some-guru-site.com/teleseminar-recording.htm”

Have you ever attempted to use the “right-click / save as” convention on a link in an email message? It just don’t work.

Why do marketers do this? Are they trying to make it difficult to download and pass an MP3 file around? Did they just have a lazy attack?

It doesn’t matter why because you can get around this nuisance. It’s really easy.

Do this:

(1) Open a new blank web page document using your favorite HTML editor.

(2) Go back to the email message and copy the web link that points to the MP3 file.

(3) Flip back over to your HTML editor, paste the link into the source code of your blank web page document and format it properly as you would any other target URL. Following this procedure, your link will have a formatting something like this (Note – the beginning and ending anchor tags here have an extra “.”):

<.a href=”http://www.some-guru-site.com/teleseminar-recording.htm”>http://www.some-guru-site.com/teleseminar-recording.htm<./a>

(4) Now, still in your HTML editor, go to “Preview” mode. Your link is fully functional and now you can use the conventional “Right-Click / Save As” function to start the file download just as if the teleseminar host had sent you to a download page online.

That’s it. That’s all there is to our little MP3 file download trick. Save this article in your “sneaky computer tricks” file and next time you find yourself fighting with your web browser to access an MP3 audio file, it works slick as a snail trail.
